Shira Toren - Beyond the Path
June 2nd-June 29th | Opening Wednesday June 2nd 6-8pm

Shira Toren's cohesive group of paintings, exhibited at the J. Klaynberg Gallery, are united by her startling use of color and mysterious line work. The textured, brilliantly colored surfaces of her canvases are interwoven with meandering trails of graphite, suggesting direction and purpose in a graceful, uninhibited way.

Shira Toren's art explores the concept of a path, or a journey, stemming from a personal evolution and empowered by the notion of movement in its many forms, be it a spiritual exploration, or a physical migration. Her keen observation and appreciation of the natural world instinctively draws out the abstract forms and elements that are the basis [form backdrop] of her work.

The paintings and works on paper are made with a unique technique Toren developed based on Venetian plaster, originally used on Italian villa walls. The slow building of layers and pigment achieve a texture and depth of color enabling a look of antiquity and distilled precision.

Born in Tel Aviv and living in New York since 1978, Toren received her BFA from Pratt and a further degree in Art Therapy at the New School. She has exhibited extensively in the New York area and the Berkshires. She currently divides her time between her studios in NYC and Hudson NY.
